Our Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer’s Secret Weapon

The power and importance of transparency is something we take pretty seriously here at OLIKA. We know that any product to touch your delicate skin should be something you know and can trust, especially when it comes to your hand sani’s. Because, like us, you’ve probably gotten pretty used to spritzing at least a hundred times per day. So, when it comes to our clean hand sanitizers, we want you to always be in the know about everything we do. Understanding the “whys” and “hows” will help you to make the best decisions for you and your skin.

When you’re constantly spritzing those gorgeous hands of yours, it can lead to some seriously dry skin. We’ve all experienced that dry, crackling, parched feeling on the tops of our knuckles at least a few times. We’re with you, it’s the worst! That’s why we wanted to create a moisturizing hand sanitizer that kills germs and bacteria while simultaneously moisturizing your skin. The result? Perfectly sanitized and smooth skin. So, how do we do it? One of our most important moisturizing agents is glycerin and we’re here to tell you all about it!

What the heck is glycerin?

Glycerin, aka glycerol, is a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. It’s a clear, colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste. Glycerin was first discovered in 1779 by a Swedish chemist who was heating up an olive oil mixture when a fatty substance was produced, he identified it as glycerin. In the mid-nineteenth century, people began using glycerin to make soap by heating up plant oils and allowing the solution to cool and harden into bar form. Today, it is found in tons of beauty and skincare products (like OLIKA!) for its moisturizing qualities. Like we said, glycerin is a type of humectant, so it works by pulling water into the outer layer of skin from deeper levels of your skin and the air. This helps to help maintain hydration and prevent skin irritation, dryness, and itchiness.

Hand Moisturizer

Glycerin is used in tons of products like cleansers, body wash, toners, sunscreen, moisturizers, face masks, and soaps. Why is it so widely used? Some body cleansing products include chemicals and fragrances that leave your skin red and irritated and others wash away the skin’s natural oils and dry it out. Those natural oils are what keeps our skin hydrated so we never want to get rid of them! Glycerin, on the other hand, keeps the skin moist and soft while gently cleaning the skin, win-win!

Glycerin Hand Sanitizer

When it comes to effective hand sanitizer, the most important quality is that it really does kill germs and bacteria. Our primary ingredient is always 65% ethyl alcohol, the CDC certified sanitizing ingredient and the safest percentage to keep you healthy and clean. Unfortunately, in order to get rid of all those germs, the alcohol can have some pretty negative effects on our skin. This is the ingredient that is responsible for that red, itchy, and flaky skin. Don’t worry, loves! We’ve added glycerin, along with aloe, to each of our OLIKA Hydrating Hand Sanitizers to counteract the effects of the ethyl alcohol. The glycerin will work to attract water from your deeper skin levels and the air humidity to always leave your hands moisturized and hydrated.

Never stop spritzing that essential oil hand sanitizer and you can be confident that you’ll never deal with those red, irritated knuckles ever again!
